Dental management of children and adolescents with special needs (0-18 years)

This training program has been designed to develop community oral health professionals’ skills and confidence to treat children and adolescents with special needs.

The training program runs for 6 days over 2-3 months and comprises of:

• Lectures - 4 days
• Clinical observation in DHSV special needs van - 1 day
• Clinical field placement in DHSV special needs van - 1 day

Dental management of preschool children (0-6 years)

This training program has been designed to develop community oral health professionals’ skills and confidence to treat very young children (0-6 years).

The training program runs for 8 days over 3 months and comprises of:

• Lectures - 5 days
• Clinical observation in private specialist dental practice – 1 day
• Clinical field placements in public dental clinics - 2 days

Dental therapist management of young adults – 19 to 25 years of age

Pending funding, this training program has been designed to develop community dental therapist’s skills and confidence to treat young adults – 19 to 25 years of age.

The program runs over a 3 month period and comprises of:

• Lecture/workshops - 11 days
• Clinical observation - 1 day
• Clinical practicum - 3 days
• Clinical experience - 8 days

Due to the practical component of the program, the maximum number of participants will be 10 dental therapists.

Dentoalveolar surgery refresher course

Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) is delighted to announce that it has again secured a very limited number of free places to the Dentoalveolar Surgery Refresher Course to occur in 2012 run by the Melbourne Dental School. This is an exciting opportunity for experienced public oral health dentists, with some years’ foundation in minor oral surgery, to improve their skills.

The objective of attending the course is to be able to manage the majority of complex extractions and minor dentoalveolar surgery cases, thus reducing the need to refer to local oral and maxillofacial surgeons or The Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. Two courses are available during 2012, being 2 to 6 July, or 3 to 7 December.
